Beginning: Pallet Town to Viridian Forest

Intro to Squirtle

Give yourself a one letter name, as usual. Get the potion from the PC for early game healing, then turn your attention to the clock in your room. Whether or not your battery has run dry, there is no optimal time to set the clock to, as this route does not take advantage of any time based events. Proceed downstairs, then to your rival's house, then to Birch and your Mudkip.

Squirtle Requirements

10 Attack, 11 Special Attack, 9 speed

The attack stat is by far the most important; you will be going for kills with Strength, Mud Shot, and Rock Tomb for the majority of the game. To ensure as many OHKOs as possible and give you the best possible chance of surviving rival 2, it is highly recommended that you leave with a 14 attack stat. This is only possible by getting a +Atk nature (3/25, Brave won't work) and a 20 or higher IV in Atk (12/32) for a total of 4.5% of mudkips. With bare minimum levels of experience, you need a 12 IV in speed to outspeed rival 2's grovyle after you are +1 and it's -1, but this is difficult to discern at low levels, and you'll have to forge ahead with whatever special attack and speed you have once you find one with good attack. If you play it safe on experience, any 9 Speed should work. There are surprisingly few enemies which even require special attacks to kill, so the time lost with a lack of investment is comparably small to that of having a low attack stat.
